I did not pass the doctoral comprehensive exam the first time, even though I typed nine pages answering the one three-page question in three hours. Yet I knew why I did not pass...I allowed myself get bogged down answering the first part of the question that my brain was too muddled to address the second part. I had to wait an entire year to take the comps again.

What did I do?

I reached out to several others and facilitated an accountability study group via email. I sent emails to the group once or twice a week, reminding them to study and practice answering mock comps questions in a controlled, timed environment. I shared tips on how to effectively study for the comps. At the end of each email, I signed off with "You can do it!" (Philippians 4:13).

Throughout the year of facilitating this e-study group, I felt more connected with each participating classmate. They responded with enthusiastic appreciation for my desire to see them not make the same mistakes I did and pass the comps their first time. By telling them they can do it, I know that I can do it because God has given me the strength, endurance, and discernment so I can uplift others to reach their best potential. The best part of teaching is that I get to tell my students they can do it.
